Was it the unseasonably warm and sunny weather that continued to linger? Was it the disappointing form we showed against Ridley on Wednesday? Was it the day’s rest that the players had yesterday? Was it the presentation of the CAIS trophy in Assembly that morning or the anticipation of the Steward’s dance that night? Was it the return to our home field and our loyal fans? Or was it the reunion with veteran striker Hilli Goldhar back from injury? Whatever it was, the Blues put on an inspired performance against our crosstown rivals, Crescent. With Hilli back in the line-up, it was bound to be an exciting game but it was Captain PJ Bujouves who in the 7th minute, after taking an excellent pass from midfielder Justin Kim, wove his way through their defense, came in one-on-one with their keeper, rounded the keeper coolly and tapped the ball in the net. A minute later, it was Hilli’s turn to snake through the defense. Deceiving the last defender by stepping on the ball and almost losing his balance, Hilli unleashed a confident strike that put us up 2 – 0. By this time our tails were up and our midfield, marshaled by CAIS hero Sean Langlois, dominated with its precise passing in the middle and stunning speed on the flanks. Hilli and PJ would benefit from this dominance, combining on the next two goals. Both times it was Hilli’s blinding pace and unselfish passing that cut apart the Coyote’s back four and PJ’s prescient positioning and clinical finishing that did the trick and by the 19th minute, PJ had his hat trick. In the 33rd minute, we were awarded a penalty, which was calmly dispatched by Theo Heintzman and by the end of the first half, the Montreal Dynamic duo, Dre Tutino and Alex Cinquino, both had their names on the game sheet. Halftime score: UCC 7 – Crescent 0.
In the second half, Crescent regrouped and came out determined, lead by their skillful #10. The Blues defended well however and continued to generate good chances offensively. In the 77th minute, on a strong individual effort, Luka Chu netted our final goal. Final score: UCC 8 – Crescent 0. Shut-out: Faiz. Man of the Match: Captain PJ Bujouves.
