Following our victory on February 14 at the CISAA Championship, the UCC Varsity Swim team traveled to Windsor, Ontario to compete in the OFSAA provincial championship on February 27 and 28. A summary is provided here and all OFSAA results are included in the link at the end of the story.

Day 1 started on a tough note, as the Junior Medley Relay team was disqualified. This team was strongly favored to win a gold or silver medal, and the Under 16 team was a favorite to win the OFSAA banner. This disqualification created an uphill battle.

There were superb performances and results for the first day. Highlights included:

William Blair: 7th place finish in the Senior 200 Free

Andrew Downing: 9th place finish in the Senior 200 Free

Skylar Kim: 8th place in the Junior 50 Free

Phil Kong: 12th place in the Junior 50 Free

Matt Karmitz: 20th in the Senior 50 Free

Nick De Chazal: 7th in the Junior 50 Back

Michael Wilson: 26th in the Junior 50 Back

James Kingsmill: Bronze Medal Senior 100 Back

Jonathan Chu: Silver Medal Senior 100 Breaststroke

Ben Sun: 12th place Senior 100 Breaststroke

Senior Medley Relay: Gold Medal – James Kingsmill, Aaron Leung, Matt Karmitz, Ben Sun

It was a fun first day, with three medal winning swims. The team was excited about Day 2 – we had more swimmers competing on this day so the championships were in sight.

February 28 started out with a bang. The Junior Freestyle Relay team comprised of Phil Kong, Robbie Knowles, Justin Lee, and Jimmy Li won Gold with a race that was almost a full two seconds faster than the second place finisher. More amazing results followed:

James Kingsmill: Gold Medal Senior 100 IM

Jon Chu: Bronze Medal Senior 100 IM

Nick De Chazal: 10th place Junior 100 IM

Matt Karmitz: 9th place Senior 100 Free

Andrew Downing: 19th place Senior 100 Free

Jimmy Li: 5th place Junior 100 Free

Justin Lee: 28th place Junior 100 Free

Ben Sun: 13th place Senior 50 Fly

Aaron Leung: 24th place Senior 50 Fly

Skylar Kim: 12th place Junior 50 Fly

The second to last event of the day is the Senior Free Relay. The team was comprised of Andrew Downing, Jon Chu, Will Blair, and John Babits. UCC was seeded first with the best time in the morning prelim swim. The team swam incredibly well, finishing a close second by 0.60 seconds and winning a Silver Medal.

The 400 Free Relay team – Robbie Knowles, Lucas Iaboni, Doug Byers, and Guclu Can – swam a respectable race for the last event of the day.

When OFSAA was completed, the Senior swimmers had won the first Senior Championship banner in UCC history. The Junior swimmers – due to the awful disqualification on the first day – had finished only 10 points behind SAC for first place.

Overall as a team, UCC finished 3rd in the entire province out of 328 schools.

Congratulations to all of the UCC Swimmers for a spectacular season. We are looking forward to next year.
