The U13B Soccer team travelled to Victoria, B.C., from October 10 th to October 14 th to participate in the CAIS U13 National Soccer Tournament. The tournament, hosted by Glenlyon Norfolk School, brought together 16 teams from 15 schools from across Canada. The team was fortunate enough to arrive early and visited the local parks, hockey team and whale watching prior to the start of the tournament.
The tournament began on Thursday, October 12, on the campus of the University of Victoria, with 3 matches against the teams in our pool. We faced strong competition and finished the day with a record of 1 – 2. The next day we were re-seeded and competed with 3 other teams in our pool for a place in the semi-final. We played strong soccer and rallied as a team to finish the day with a 2 – 1 record. We successfully qualified for the semi-final on Saturday.
Saturday brought cool, damp weather as we faced off against Royal St. George’s College. The game was very close and the regulation time ended in a 0 – 0 draw. We began the overtime period shortly after the end of regulation, allowing RSGC to score early in the first overtime period. As a team, we pressed hard and secured the tying goal late in the second overtime period. We now moved into penalty shots to determine a winner. Our goalkeeper came up strong and stopped 3 of the 5 penalties, while our shooters scored on 3 of the 4 shots to win the match.
Saturday afternoon we faced off against Ashbury College for the Division 2 Championship. We played the match at GNS after a quick snack. The match was a close affair as both teams pushed hard to secure the win. We scored early and had a one goal lead at half. Our opponents tried valiantly to score, but our defense remained strong. We completed our victory with a last-minute defense of a corner kick. Everyone waited with anticipation for the final whistle. Finally, the referee signaled an end to the match and we had secured the National title!
