(Oct 28th) – On a rainy Saturday morning, the U14 soccer team hosted Crescent School on Commons Field in the CISAA playoff semi-final. The Coyotes would get off to a good start and carry that momentum throughout the half in what was a gutty and hard working performance. While the Blues were on their heels somewhat, the back four of Ruthard, Jamal, Evans and Radhakrishnan were calm and held steady against Crescent’s energetic attack. Sebastian Jones was also very solid in nets and did good work catching and trapping the ball in slippery conditions. Industrious wing half Josh Gelfand, who created a lot of offensive opportunities for the team on the right side of the pitch, would eventually be rewarded for his work with a cross that was redirected on a nice volley by Lucas Fiorini to put the team up 1-0. This did not slow down Crescent, who continued to battle hard and create opportunities. The Blues were somewhat frustrated by the wet playing conditions, which made it difficult to establish their passing game, but continued to work hard. Eventually tenacious striker James Matheson would find the back of the net and the team would reach the half at 2-0.
The second half would see the Blues push the play and eventually the opposition began to tire. Matheson would get his second goal and Fiorini would score two more to complete the hat trick and give the team a well earned, hard fought 5-0 win that was a much closer game than the scoreline would indicate. The CISAA Championship will be played this Wednesday, November 1st at UCC (time to be determined), when the team will face St. Michael’s College, in what will be a “Battle of the Blues” for the title.
