The Varsity Football team travelled to the University of Toronto on Friday, October 13th for the annual Battle of the Blues game against neighbourhood rival St. Mike’s. The game was an important one for both teams, with St. Mike’s in second place with a 2-1 record and UCC in third with a 1-2 record. A win could mean home field advantage for the semifinal playoff in 3 weeks time. UCC was also keen on reversing the count after St. Mike’s beat the Blues on home turf on Association Day. The Blues got off to a quick start in the first quarter on a TD by WR Denis Khavin on a nice toss by QB Alex Munoz. The teams then exchanged scoring back and forth until the 4th quarter. With the Blues hanging on to a slim 14-9 lead late the fourth quarter, the game turned around on a St. Mike’s punt. Conrad Mahoney gathered in the St. Mike’s punt at his own 30 yard line and got around the corner of the St. Mike’s coverage team, scampering the rest of the way for the TD and the final score of the game. After conversion, final score was UCC 21 SMCS 9. The win vaulted UCC into second place with 2 home games to go. Saturday, October 21st vs TCS and then Saturday, October 28th against undefeated SAC. The player of the game was Conrad Mahoney and well deserved.
