Varsity Rugby Season Ends at SAC

The UCC Varsity Rugby team finished the season with a loss away to SAC, but in many ways the loss felt like redemption. Just the week before SAC came to UCC and ran out 27-0 winners, dominating the play on attack and suffocating the Blues in defence. Going into that game the Blues were the only undefeated team in CISAA, having won four games in a row, including a win over eventual CISAA champions Appleby. Read More

Blues Beat Bears in Port Hope (Varsity Rugby)

The UCC Varsity Rugby team travelled to Port Hope on Saturday to take on the TCS Bears after a short turnaround in the middle of exam season. The Trinity campus field provided the ideal rugby setting for the encounter and the Trinity team added to the rugby atmosphere by performing a traditional South African war chant in five different languages that they picked up on tour to South Africa before the game. While impressive, the Read More

UCC Blues Outclass Crescent at Home

The UCC Varsity Rugby team continued to impress on Tuesday, outshining a talented but overmatched Crescent team in their mid-week tilt 29-10. Despite the final score line, the Blues were certainly determined to make things difficult for themselves, going down a man due to the fastest yellow card in the history of CISAA – 3.4 seconds according to some observers – as Connor McKinney was judged to have taken out his man in the air Read More

Varsity Night Victory for Blues Rugby

UCC faced their toughest challenge of the season so far on Friday night – facing off against a very talented first placed Appebly College, as well as battling the elements. Determination and grit were needed in order to conquer both adversaries. The Blues started the game on the back foot, as Appleby adapted to the conditions quickly, playing tight and putting the Blues under pressure at the breakdown. The boys from Oakville were extremely quick Read More

Blues Rugby Victorious Over Local Rivals

The UCC Blues kicked off their CISAA Rugby season at St. Mike’s on the back of some impressive pre-season results.  Wins over Medway and Northern as well a third place finish in the CAIS tournament gave the boys confidence and expectations were high heading into their first game of the season. The Blues continued their penchant for starting hot, dominating the early exchanges and showing some impressive physicality in defense.  AJ Springer continued his remarkable play, throwing Read More

UCC Varsity Rugby Earns 3rd Place in CAIS National Championship

The boys travelled to Ottawa’s Ashbury College this past weekend for the CAIS National Rugby Championship and can be very proud of their efforts. The first day of the tournament was an absolutely fantastic day for rugby – cold, rainy and 100% overcast…. Well, a great day for the forwards. The morning game pitted the Blues against CISAA rivals TCS Bears.  With the conditions making handling difficult in the early going it was the more Read More

Varsity Rugby Ends Pre-Season With a Win

UCC Varsity Rugby hosted Northern in their second friendly of the season on Wednesday, April 12. The Blues started strongly, but sloppiness at the breakdown was a problem, as they failed to convert on early pressure. The handling was lovely to see and the Blues picked great lines, but failure to support breaks and a lopsided penalty count meant that the boys had to wait until very late for their first score – a wonderful Read More

Varsity Rugby Starts Season Strongly

After thirteen early morning bubble training sessions and a full week of practice in the snow, rain, hail and all else, the UCC Varsity Rugby season kicked off Wednesday with a trip to London to take on Medway. The boys travelled to London in good spirits, anxious to come to grips with the perennial Southern Ontario powerhouse Cowboys. Alumni Field at Western University – home of the Mustangs Rugby Program – provided the perfect backdrop Read More
