LATEST TEAM NEWS

UCC Fall Well Short in Final

The 2018 Varsity Rugby season ended at St. Andrew’s College on Saturday, May 26 with a loss in the CISAA final to a very Talented SAC team. The boys played their hearts out – tackling strongly and looking dangerous at times on attack.  Everyone on the team put in big shifts, but Jay Wallace in particular was inspiring in his willingness to throw his body around. In the end the Saints were too strong and Read More

Varsity Rugby Headed to CISAA Finals

The Varsity Rugby team welcomed Trinity College to Lonsdale Road for the second time this season on Wednesday to decide on a second finalist for the CISAA championship – SAC having beaten Appleby handily earlier in the day.  While UCC dispatched TCS with relative ease early in the season, the Blues were taking nothing for granted against a hard-working and physical Trinity side. From the opening kick-off it was obvious that this would be a Read More

UCC Varsity Rugby Suffers Biggest Defeat in Six Years

The UCC Varsity Rugby team travelled to Aurora on Wednesday in what could have been a preview of the CISAA championship final against St. Andrew’s College.  Unfortunately, the Blues will have to do much better if they hope to bring home their first gold metal since 2010. The 52-10 loss marks the largest in recent memory for UCC, but the score line cannot do justice to the effort the boys put into the game. SAC Read More

Varsity Rugby Clinches Playoff Spot in Nail-Biter

Game Photos The Varsity Rugby team travelled to Oakville on Saturday to battle with the two time reigning CISAA champions Appleby. Despite the forecast calling for rain, the weather could not have been more perfect for rugby with sun and a little cool lake breeze. The Blues had scored first in every win this season until Appleby slotted an early penalty to go up 3-0 in the first minute of the game.  Not discouraged, the boys Read More

Blues Best Bears in Varsity Rugby

Your Varsity Rugby team welcomed the Trinity College School Bears on Friday for Varsity Night.  The lightning that delayed kick-off by fifteen minutes must have inspired the Blues, who came out of the gate storming in the first 5 minutes. After a number of phases and strong carries from Pier-Olivier Lefebvre and Darius Mani, Will Bradley found Karl Wennberg for the first try of the game – and the first of Wennberg’s hat trick.   Trinity Read More

UCC Varsity Rugby With Second Big Win at Crescent

The UCC Varsity Rugby team headed to Crescent School on Saturday morning, looking to build on the momentum gained from a strong home opener.  The boys were fired up on the day and started the match aggressively with Connor McKinney plucking the ball out of the air on the opening kick-off.   A strong carry from Gianluca Iannantuono, followed by some slick handling saw Joseph Samuel go over in the corner after only 30 seconds of Read More

UCC Varsity Rugby Kicks Off With Emphatic Win

The Varsity Rugby team started the season off strong with a big win over St. Mike’s on April 25th. Coming off a 1-1 preseason, expectations were high as the boys began their CISAA campaign hoping to improve upon last year’s loss to SAC in the CISAA Semi-Finals. St. Mike’s were the first test of the season, and the boys proved to be up to the task. Led by Karl Wennburg and Jack Tucker (both of Read More

Blues Top Midtown Rivals in Pre-Season Finale

The Upper Canada College Blues finished their pre-season with a much-improved performance against Northern S.S on Thursday. Both the First and Second Teams were in action against Northern and both teams impressed with their level of improvement since the outing against Medway. The opening five minutes of the first game looked like more of the same from the previous week, with UCC unable to keep possession.   Difficulties in recycling and poor body position at the Read More

Varsity Rugby Outclassed in Opener

It was a tough day at the office for the UCC Varsity Rugby Team on Saturday as they welcomed Southern Ontario powerhouse Medway H.S. to Lonsdale Road.  Ontario number three ranked Medway – boasting at least four provincial and national team players – were playing their fourth game of the season, while some of the boys on the UCC side were testing themselves on the rugby pitch for the first time after attending only a week of Read More

Varsity Rugby Season Ends at SAC

The UCC Varsity Rugby team finished the season with a loss away to SAC, but in many ways the loss felt like redemption. Just the week before SAC came to UCC and ran out 27-0 winners, dominating the play on attack and suffocating the Blues in defence. Going into that game the Blues were the only undefeated team in CISAA, having won four games in a row, including a win over eventual CISAA champions Appleby. Read More

Blues Beat Bears in Port Hope (Varsity Rugby)

The UCC Varsity Rugby team travelled to Port Hope on Saturday to take on the TCS Bears after a short turnaround in the middle of exam season. The Trinity campus field provided the ideal rugby setting for the encounter and the Trinity team added to the rugby atmosphere by performing a traditional South African war chant in five different languages that they picked up on tour to South Africa before the game. While impressive, the Read More

UCC Blues Outclass Crescent at Home

The UCC Varsity Rugby team continued to impress on Tuesday, outshining a talented but overmatched Crescent team in their mid-week tilt 29-10. Despite the final score line, the Blues were certainly determined to make things difficult for themselves, going down a man due to the fastest yellow card in the history of CISAA – 3.4 seconds according to some observers – as Connor McKinney was judged to have taken out his man in the air Read More

Varsity Night Victory for Blues Rugby

UCC faced their toughest challenge of the season so far on Friday night – facing off against a very talented first placed Appebly College, as well as battling the elements. Determination and grit were needed in order to conquer both adversaries. The Blues started the game on the back foot, as Appleby adapted to the conditions quickly, playing tight and putting the Blues under pressure at the breakdown. The boys from Oakville were extremely quick Read More

Blues Rugby Victorious Over Local Rivals

The UCC Blues kicked off their CISAA Rugby season at St. Mike’s on the back of some impressive pre-season results.  Wins over Medway and Northern as well a third place finish in the CAIS tournament gave the boys confidence and expectations were high heading into their first game of the season. The Blues continued their penchant for starting hot, dominating the early exchanges and showing some impressive physicality in defense.  AJ Springer continued his remarkable play, throwing Read More

UCC Varsity Rugby Earns 3rd Place in CAIS National Championship

The boys travelled to Ottawa’s Ashbury College this past weekend for the CAIS National Rugby Championship and can be very proud of their efforts. The first day of the tournament was an absolutely fantastic day for rugby – cold, rainy and 100% overcast…. Well, a great day for the forwards. The morning game pitted the Blues against CISAA rivals TCS Bears.  With the conditions making handling difficult in the early going it was the more Read More

Varsity Rugby Ends Pre-Season With a Win

UCC Varsity Rugby hosted Northern in their second friendly of the season on Wednesday, April 12. The Blues started strongly, but sloppiness at the breakdown was a problem, as they failed to convert on early pressure. The handling was lovely to see and the Blues picked great lines, but failure to support breaks and a lopsided penalty count meant that the boys had to wait until very late for their first score – a wonderful Read More

Varsity Rugby Starts Season Strongly

After thirteen early morning bubble training sessions and a full week of practice in the snow, rain, hail and all else, the UCC Varsity Rugby season kicked off Wednesday with a trip to London to take on Medway. The boys travelled to London in good spirits, anxious to come to grips with the perennial Southern Ontario powerhouse Cowboys. Alumni Field at Western University – home of the Mustangs Rugby Program – provided the perfect backdrop Read More
