There's no better illustration of cricket's history at Upper Canada College than the depiction of a student dressed in cricket attire on the armorial bearings displayed above the entrance to Laidlaw Hall. Cricket was the first sport played at UCC, with the first representative game played against the Toronto Cricket Club in 1836.

With the emergence of other sports, cricket is not as pre-eminent as it once was, but the school still produces a competitive team and has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, holding the CISAA championship trophy for the last three seasons. Drawing on students from diverse backgrounds, some with a grounding in cricket and others with an open mind and the determination to master a new game, a squad of 15 or so players is typically selected each year along with a development squad of about six younger boys.

The team competes in the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association against Trinity College School and St. Andrew's College in home and away 30-over games to decide the championship. The boys also play in a tournament at the Toronto Cricket Club and a number of exhibition games of varying formats.

All students at the Upper School are welcome to tryout at the start of the spring term and it's not unusual for boys in Year 8 or Year 9 to earn a place on the development squad even if they haven't played competitively before.
